WW: For Those Who Enjoy Watching Paint Dry

Just when you thought I couldn't get any more boring, shallow and self-absorbed, I present to you: Root Watch 09. Yes, I have made the not-very-well-thought-out decision to grow out my 'real' hair. You all know how I agonize about every single aspect of my hair, and it is dragging me down, man. I am determined to address each follicular concern and solve them permanently, so I can focus on more important things, like which purse should I buy next (Spring is almost here, people!). Having come to terms with wearing a chin length bob for the rest of my days, it is now time to focus on color.

I haven't seen my natural color since I was 13. That's the year I wielded my very first bottle of Sun In, with hideous results. My mom thought it best to remove the orange, so she coated my head with a color-stripper. Well, my friends, not only did it remove the orange, it removed the brown and the red and the golden blonde... I had completely white hair. And, well, the rest is history. I have been every shade of every color, including jet black during my "alternative" phase in college, and I am quite curious about the actual color of my hair.

Of course I should be very thankful that I actually even still have hair, given the torture I have put it through, and leave well enough alone. But I believe that beggars CAN be choosers, therefore I am moving forward with my little experiment. I suppose I should make it clear that this, in NO way, means I plan to stay with my natural mousy/salt/pepper disaster, once it has been fully uncovered. I just want to see what it is, exactly, I am really dealing with.

Anyway, this picture was taken this morning, approximately 8 weeks since my last dye job. For all you waiting on pins and needles, I will try to keep you updated monthly. Unless I get too bored (or too depressed) to continue and run to the drugstore for my favorite L'Oreal natural brown #6A. I am feeling very committed, and I know I will find plenty of love, support and finger-pointing here in BlogLand, so let's get this party started!

And, of course, if I had Angie's gorgeous red hair, this wouldn't even be an issue.

Did your "alternative" phase in college involve girls too?

(Mine didn't, of course, just curious about you.)

Can't wait to see the "natural" you!!

Good luck with this project. I think growing out hair is the hardest thing - for whatever goal. And I did the Sun-In too! Not a good look.

I don't see any grow out - really!! And just so you know - I did this in 2004 after REALLY bad dye color and striping - all of 2005 - no dye - and it still wasn't completely grown out - IT TAKES FOREVER!!!!!!

How did Sun In EVER catch on? It didn't look good on ANYONE.

Speaking of hair........I need a trim. Badly. But I HATE trying new people......but I'm going to have to...and soon. :)

OMG I am weird and on pins and needles to see what color it is. This is like waiting for a chick to hatch from her egg. I got your back. I will support you and encourage you not to give in. Plus you look darling in a hat. Cling to that if it gets too overwhelming.

First to EM- isn't that what they said in college- they were 'just curious'?

Next- when I saw this picture at first glance- I thought it was an ultrasound picture- no I'm not drunk.

But now that I know you're not pregnant, I'm very curious to find out your natural color- I'm banking on an auburn.

I've had every color except black. Right now I'm stuck on red. BUT when I get it dyed it looks freaking purplish red the first few days. I feel like a badass those days. LOL

I remember my dad asking my mom "So, what IS the color of her hair". No one ever knew, and I forgot. Now, I see roots...and....and they're WHITE!!! holy crap!!!!

Let the root watch begin! I was never brave enough to do anything to my hair - I always had a fear that it would turn green or something. I don't know. So, good luck! And pretty please show us that new purse when you get it!

Oh I went through enormous amounts of Sun-in. But it worked well for me. And except for when I was prego with my middle son, I have being dyeing my hair nonstop since I was 13 too.
Cant wait to see when it is all grown out.

I have more hair horror stories than I can count. No gray hairs yet, however. Just hair on my neck wattle.

Good luck! I have often wondered what my hair would look like if I grew out the color.......but I'm too chicken to do it.

Grey is gorg. Or at least that's what I'm telling myself. I just washed that grey away and am seriously considering letting it stay next time.

Keep up with the hair updates...obviously, I could discuss it for days on end.

My "alternative" phase in college involved red hair. I never had the guts to go all out and bleach it to put in real red...unlike the nutter I dated in college.

I'm trying to convince my mom to do the same, but she can't get past the skunk stage. Doesn't help that her hair is black to begin with.

Good luck on the growing! At least you keep your hair short (and have cute hats for the bad days).

My wife always has me help her when she dyes her hair. She tends to use non-permanent probably in case she doesn't like how it turns out.

I would really like to swear at you right now. Where's the gray?

Jen said...

Why? Why? Why? I can't remember what my natural color is and I am going to keep it that way.

I did the sun in thing when I was 14 or so. White blond streaks all around the front of my face, nothing on the back or sides. It would be 17 years before I saw my natural hair color again.

My hair is a mouse brown too. Turns out it has some natural curl as well. Who knew? I sort of like it, it's grown on me, though I do give in to highlights in the fall.

I remember Sun In!!! I poured like a whole bottle of it in my hair when I was 11! lol I ended up with blonde, my friend ended up with red, and this other girl we used it on ended up with purple!!

I'm excited to see how your hair turns out! I'm 23 and scared to let mine grow out!

How exciting to find your roots! ; )
Please hold fast so that we can see, k?

Ah Deb, you are so brave. BAHAHAHA I have no doubt as to my hair color-- it was dark brown, now it's gray underneath my color. I'm behind on coloring it:)

Kim said...

I have also done it all! A few years ago when I had very short hair I stopped coloring. Now that it's to my shoulders, I just use a temporary color. During the summer, I didn't even bother with that since we were in the pool and sun so much. My hair stylist then informed me I am 90% gray!

Good luck!

Debz said...

Well since my hairdresser last year told me I was 70% grey (I fired the bitch) I know better than to let my hair go for more than 2-3 weeks tops.
Good luck to ya. I would not have the balls. Well, you know what I mean.
